Throttle control
The throttle changes speed and the load on the wheels. Smooth throttle inputs help you control acceleration and line more precisely.
What the throttle does
When you open the throttle, part of the load shifts to the rear wheel, unloading the front. The more abruptly you open the throttle, the faster the load distribution changes.
Steady throttle
Once you have reached the desired speed, hold a small, steady throttle opening. Constantly opening and closing the throttle makes the motorcycle alternately accelerate and slow down.
The front end becomes more sensitive
With abrupt throttle opening, the front end unloads more. On an uneven road, the handlebar reacts more noticeably to bumps and ruts, so add throttle smoothly.
On a slippery surface
The less certain you are about the available grip, the gentler your throttle changes should be.
Entry
Do not add throttle if your view is restricted, the lean is already significant, or you are unsure of the available grip.
Middle
If your line is stable, a small, steady throttle opening helps keep drive even and avoids the rocking caused by repeatedly opening and closing the throttle.
Exit
When the road ahead becomes visible and the lean decreases, smoothly add throttle. If the lean stays the same, the arc becomes wider as speed increases. Consider how much room remains at the exit.
When to open it more
While the line is unclear or the lean is significant, hold a steady, moderate throttle. Open the throttle farther when the exit is visible and the motorcycle begins to come upright.
Abrupt opening
Abrupt throttle opening quickly increases longitudinal load on the rear tire and reduces the grip reserve available for changing the line.
Accelerating without clear space ahead
Do not accelerate until you have looked farther ahead. You can leave one hazard behind and immediately close on the next car, corner, or driveway.
Do not roll off abruptly
Roll off the throttle smoothly, especially while leaned. An abrupt roll-off quickly transfers load forward and unloads the rear wheel.
Accidental throttle opening while braking
If you unintentionally twist the throttle while applying the front brake, check your wrist position and grip. With the motorcycle stationary and the engine off, practice squeezing the lever without twisting the throttle.
